Prof. Ray Monk
University of Southampton

Ray Monk is a British philosopher. He is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, where he has taught since 1992. He won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the 1991 Duff Cooper Prize for "Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius". His interests lie in the philosophy of mathematics, the history of analytic philosophy, and philosophical aspects of biographical writing. Monk is author of a two-volume biography of Bertrand Russell ("The Spirit of Solitude" and "The Ghost of Madness"). His "Inside the Center: the Life of J. Robert Oppenheimer" was published in 2012.

"This biography transforms Wittgenstein into a human being" Independent on Sunday

"Monk's biography is deeply intelligent, generous to the ordinary reader... It is a beautiful portrait of a beautiful life" Guardian

"This is a wholly admirable biography. It is not easy to combine a continuous and intelligible story of a man’s life with a succinct account of his changing philosophical doctrines. Ray Monk succeeds both with the life and with the doctrines and he is the first person to make entirely clear the substantial interaction between them." New York Review of Books

The chamber music programme presents the young cellist Matthias Bartolomey, with pieces by Benjamin Britten and Johann Sebastian Bach.
