Ileana Tonca is a singer Viennese audiences have taken to heart both on the operatic stage and in concert. Since 1999 she has been an ensemble member at the Vienna State Opera, where she has performed more than 50 roles.

Tonca's unique stage presence also makes her a welcome guest in other opera houses: at the Bavarian State Opera she appeared in Der Ring des Nibelungen, as well as in Die Fledermaus (as Adele), while at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin she sang Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier. At the Theater an der Wien and the Ravenna Festival Tonca performed under Riccardo Muti in Le Nozze di Figaro and sang her first Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Mozart Festival in Reinsberg.

Other roles in her repertoire include Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail); Rosina (Il Barbiere di Sevilla); Adina (L'Elisir d’amore); Siebel (Faust); Papagena and Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte); Susanna and Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro); Elvira (L‘Italiana in Algeri); Lisa (La Sonnambula); Jemmy (Guillaume Tell); Oscar (Un ballo in maschera); Nanetta (Falstaff); Sophie (Werther); Frasquita (Carmen); Olga (Fedora); Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel); and Hirte (Tannhäuser), among others.

Ileana Tonca has a wide and varied concert repertoire in both Lieder and oratorio fields, with works by Monteverdi, Buxtehude, Telemann, Vivaldi, Bach, Pergolesi, Handel, Salieri, Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms, Fauré, Orff. In concert she has worked with conductors including Fabio Luisi, Bertrand de Billy and Martin Sieghart. She has been a guest at the Akzente Festival, the International Chamber Music Festival Austria "Allegro Vivo", the Graz Styriarte, MDR-Musiksommer in Leipzig, Attersee-Klassik and Brucknerfest Linz in Austria. Tonca is also a regular guest at both the most prestigious Viennese concert halls, the Konzerthaus and the Musikverein.

Tonca was born in Rumania and already as a student won numerous prizes at international singing competitions. In recent years Tonca was a recipient of the Eberhard-Wächter-Medaille of the Vienna State Opera, as well as the "frauen.kunst.preis" of the Austrian Ministry of Culture.

Ileana Tonca is a founding honorary member of the George Enescu Society in Vienna.
